The Story of Margaret's Gardens . . .
Margaret Thomas and her husband
George moved to Lawyers Road in
1963. In that same year, Margaret
started her garden with flowers from a
neighbor who presented her with some
irises “over the fence - that were much
prettier than mine”. A year later, she
found herself widowed with a young
son and a thriving collection of irises.
She sold her irises to help support her
family, and to expand the variety of
flowers in her garden.
For more than 40 years, Margaret has
opened her gardens to photographers,
painters, school groups, adult
education classes and the general
public. Each year, thousands visit, some from as far away as Canada, and
stroll through the aisles of this magnificent, award-winning garden. Every Spring
iris enthusiasts, and amateur gardeners, come to the gardens to pick out
flowers and place orders for bulbs to be planted into their own gardens. Groups
from local assisted living facilities make Margaret's Gardens an annual event.
Some of these senior residents, who are no longer able to walk through the
gardens, enjoy the beautiful setting and flowers from the seat of their bus. In the
wintertime, many local residents make Margaret’s Gardens a favored location
to purchase their family Christmas trees.
Through Margaret's generous spirit in welcoming many local residents to her
property, she has helped to bring community together in ways reminiscent of
times past. Visitors walk away with a warm feeling, similar to memories of
treasured times with grandparents.
